After 14 days in Alaska, we finally had a classic rainy, cold day. But, we didn't skip a beat. After getting some great recommendations from the other guests at the Highland B&B (which is awesome, btw) we headed to Whittier and Prince William Sound. This day turned out to be so exciting!!!

First stop, the Wildlife Conservation Center. Home to wounded or orphaned animals.

Next, a 5 hour glacier cruise in the Prince William Sound.

What an awesome day!!!

Depending on your point of view our flight seeing trip into Denali could be considered a bust or an adventure. The weather kept us from seeing much of the mountains or glaciers. On the other hand, Grant got to be the co-pilot for our flight. (In other words, he sat in the right hand, front seat.) He said he didn't touch the controls but a few times, I felt the plane lurch. Grant did have a great view of what we could see. The company chose to give our money back since the flight didn't go as planned. I would call it an adventure.

You may notice my face looks a little dirty. Well, we had a some engine trouble and I helped with a little maintenance before we headed back.

Kidding. Actually the story is considerably less glamorous. The ink rubbed off our boarding pass while playing peek-a-boo with Xan. . . And no one told me! Grant said that the pony tail threw him off and he couldn't tell. What does that even mean!?

How to change a diaper on a mountain side

We were on the look out for animals as we started our first hikes in the Denali National Park. Although, with the amount of noise Xan was making, babbling and singing to himself, he probably scared them all off. Xan really enjoyed being outside but who wouldn't? It was absolutely beautiful.

About 1.5 miles from our car and up a steep slope in the off trail section, we had a diaper changing emergency. I managed to find a semi-flat area to clean Xan up and thank goodness he cooperated. He did eat a few sticks while lying there. Oops.

This moose was right next to the road and our car. While Grant and I found this very exciting, Xan feel asleep.

The adult moose is easy to pick out but her two babies blend in very well. Can you see them?

Grant and I had a massage this morning so we headed into town later than the crowd. Xan slept until we headed back on the ship to watch us pull out of port.

Pirates have taken the ship. I knew it was a risk in the Caribbean but I never thought it would happen here in Alaska. Captain Hook, Peter Pan, and Jack Sparrow (sorry, Captain Jack Sparrow) were wandering the ship. We even saw the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie in 3D!

Flounder's Reef

You may have noticed that Xan is not in any of the pictures from Skagway. He had no interest in a many hour bus and train tour and asked to stay on the Ship at the Flounders' Reef (an area just for kids his age). We spent the evening just hanging around the ship.

Today we stopped in Skagway, the historic starting point on a journey to the Klondike and your opportunity to hunt for gold. The rush is long over but the town of Skagway and many of the points along the trail have preserved the history of that time.

We traveled over the White Pass by rail but during the gold rush, prospectors were on foot. They had to make the trip through the pass many times to carry up the 2000 lbs of supplies (enough for a year) required to make it past the Canadian checkpoint.

It was a beautiful, warm day with not a cloud in the sky. I tried to imagine what sort of drive one would need to brave this mountain pass in the winter with only the hope of riches. It was a grueling trek with many dangers. Seems like a pretty big risk to me. But the countryside is breathtakingly beautiful. Maybe that, and a large sense of adventure where enough.

We also visited a sled dog training camp. Many of the dogs have run the Iditarod. There were even husky puppies to play with :)

I was so excited about this part!! Xan still wasn't too sure about the characters. He wanted to get close enough to really check them out but not too close.

He does LOVE our waiter Tino. Tino is always coming up with great ways to entertain Xan so Grant and I have enough time to enjoy our meal. He makes great hats out of napkins.

Xan was such a trooper tonight. He fell asleep just in time for us to go and see the show that night. He slept through the whole thing. We even caught the late movie (Tangled in 3D). He woke up and watched about half of it.

Xan was very interested in Mickey. He kicked and screamed to get close to him but stopped at about 5 feet away. Apparently, that was close enough. When Mickey approached us for the picture, Xan had a slight come-apart. I guess he just wanted to keep an eye on him. We couldn't get him to look at the camera.

I included the below picture just for Nonna. We discovered, Xan loves watermelon. (My Mom, aka Nonna, really hates it.)

And since Grant is not a fan of dancing, I found the cutest guy that loves to dance with me.

A beautiful island full of shops, parks, waterfront restaurants and a neat fresh food market. We spent the day here wandering. Xan was either exhausted by the walk to the island (over a bridge) or completely bored with the shops :)

Today we had a consistent light rain, for most of the day so we chose all indoor activities.

First we visited a Science Museum. Not uniquely Canadian but I loved it!

Next we headed to Stanley Park and the aquarium.

I have been so excited about our trip to Alaska but nervous about flying with Xan. He is now mobile and I couldn't imagine how to keep him still during our 6 hours in the air.

Well, we survived with few fits on the plane (not zero). My secret? Goldfish. I gave him one at a time for several hours. He ate his body weight in goldfish crackers :)

Now with the stressful part of the trip over, I am ready to have fun!

A day for remembering

I never expected Pearl Harbor to make me feel the way it did. I now understand why men rushed to the recruitment offices after the attack. December 7th will hold new meaning to me from now on.

The Road to Hana

Today we traveled the Road to Hana. It took us 12 hours to complete the journey (roundtrip). Along the way we hiked through the forest, fed ducks, ate coconuts, and played in a few waterfalls. There is no way I can describe the beauty of what we saw so here are some pictures.

Last night we attended our first luau. It included all the traditional events: roasting a big pig in the ground, a massive feast and a hula show.

I had perviously thought, "how hard can hula be" and "I could do that" but as I stared, open mouthed at the dancers I knew I was wrong. All I could say was, "WOW". The grace and speed with which they moved was incredible. I think they had to have a few extra joints in their hips.

It was a great evening and I think I ate my body weight in pork.

With most of the day to fill with whatever our hearts desired we decided to go on a quest for the perfect tropical lagoon (and if there was snorkeling, that would be a bonus). We drove along the coast north from our b&b. We stopped at several cliff top look outs and even hiked down to a blow hole. Grant tricked me into moving in close for a picture with the blow hole where I was promptly soaked. He still swears he was "just trying to get a good shot". The drive itself around the coast was unbelievable. Just like you would picture Hawaii to look; cliffs and rigged hills covered in green next to the bluest water I've ever seen.

We finally picked Honolua Bay as the best stop when we saw it from a look over.

Haleakala

My sister Lydia might can take it but 26 miles on a bike is enough to wear me out, even if it is all downhill. Today Grant and I completed the trek down Haleakala (about 6500 ft from our staring point to end). It took us 3 hours to make it all the way down with stopping to have a picnic, climb a few trees and buy fruit from a local orchard. We even passed several bikers riding up.

We ended the day by relaxing at the beach. Ahhh, what a day.

****As a side note, my sister in law gave me the neatest wrap for Christmas. Quite timely since we were headed to Hawaii. So begins my, how may ways can I tie it. This is wrap #2 (my favorite so far).

Xan is staying home with his grandparents (let the spoiling begin) and this is the first trip Grant and I have taken alone since he was born. I miss him already but am looking forward to hanging with Grant.

TOP TEN - New England Road Trip

1. The Bite

A classic crab shack on the side of the road on Martha's Vineyard. We ordered fried shrimp, fried clams, fried bites and clam chowder. It was one of my favorite meals and the best fried shrimp I have ever had. Great. . . . . Now I'm hungry.

2. Whale Watching

Awesome experience! Such beautiful, large animals.

3. Travel with Xan

Grant and I had lots of questions about how traveling would go post-kid. What could we do? Where could we go? Take Xan? Leave him at home? I was thrilled with how well he handled it all. He seemed to really enjoy the activity (and his backpack - see item #8). I hear that he will get harder to 'manage' as he gets older. So, I guess we'll take it one adventure at a time.

4. Red Sox game

Xan got lots of attention at the game. "Raisin' him right" seemed to be the general consensus.

5. Nantucket

Beautiful Island! It really looked like a postcard.

6. Driving

With a 6 month baby in the house Grant and I don't have time to hang out like we used to. Since this was a road trip we had time in the car to talk, sing along with the radio and just be goofy.

7. Plimoth Plantation

Setup to look like a 16th century English settlement including the people. You could wander through the village and interact with the settlers as they worked in the gardens, tended their animals, built homes, etc. I spent 30 minutes visiting with Stephen Hopkins (a Mayflower passenger) in his home. It was like really being there.

8. Xan's backpack

Xan loved this backpack about 90% of the time. He could look around, see what was going on and even sleep in it.

9. Yale and Harvard

College visits with Xan. It's never too early to start :)

10. Newport Mansions

Massive, elaborate homes build during the US Guild age. I would love to see more.

Whale Watching

This morning we took a boat out of the Cape Cod Bay to go whale watching. It was an incredible experience. The storm from earlier in the week stirred the fish further toward the surface and we were able to witness a whale feast. Many, many whales were splashing and flipping while eating the fish there. The guide told us it was a unique event, to see so many feeding at one time so close to the surface.

The rest of the afternoon was spent walking around Provincetown, MA. This is the location of the first Mayflower landing and the signing of the Mayflower compact. After 5 weeks of exploration, the pilgrims left this shore and headed to what is now Plymouth. Plymouth became the first permanent settlement in North America. A monument to the Pilgrims was built in 1910 in Provincetown to commemorate the first landing. It is a 252 foot tower that over looks the bay. On a clear day you can see Boston. Grant and I made the climb to the top (Xan rode in his backpack).

As for our time on the island, it couldn't have been more beautiful. It looked exactly like you imagine a New England coastal village would look.

Our vacation with the President

We hit Martha's Vineyard during the biggest storm of the summer. Between the rain and wind, it was difficult to enjoy everything the island had to offer. We braved the weather to visit some of the main sights and had several good meals. 'The Bite' was a crab shack that had the best fried shrimp I have ever had and Grant got a great Lobster bake at the 'Home Port'. Oh, and guess who decided to take a vacation to Martha's Vineyard at the same time. The First Family.

It’s never too early to start. Xan toured both Harvard and Yale with particular stops at the law schools just in case he wants to follow in his Dad’s career-steps. He slept the whole time we visited Harvard. I guess he was uninterested, but Yale was another matter. He was alert and looking around. He even wanted to wear his Yale shirt (though he did throw up all over it. Don’t know what that means).

The Big Green Monster

What on earth is the Big Green Monster? I saw this phrase all over the place. On t-shirts. Signs. What does that have to do with Boston? Let me tell you a tale.

Tonight, we went to a Red Sox’s game. Grant was excited about seeing Fenway Park and even spent Xan’s nap time today looking for a Red Sox onesie for the game. When we got to our seats at the stadium, Grant points to the outfield and says, “Look, there’s the Green Monster”. I spent several minutes looking for a picture of a monster, or a mascot before asking, “Huh?” Grant finally explained (with a face that said, isn’t it obvious), “It’s the wall”. For all of you that were as confused as me, Fenway Park has a very tall, green wall that makes out of the park homeruns even more difficult to hit. Hence, the Big Green Monster.

Also, I included some pictures of Xan in his Boston Red Sox’s outfit. Grant said I should mention he is also wearing red socks. It’s so CUTE!

Constant Vigilance

I will admit that I was nervous about our trip to Boston. Not the vacation itself but the actual travel. Xan had never been on a plane and I didn’t know how it might go.

This is how it went. . . . . . Xan, for the most part, slept on the plane and was in a great mood even though it was almost midnight when we arrived in Boston. I thought we had made it, I could see the hotel from our taxi when Grant looked over at me with a horrified face. He heard a ‘gas’ sound and something from Xan’s diaper sprayed him. Our taxi driver didn’t notice the smell. He was too busy giving us the weirdest parenting advice I’ve ever heard. Grant was quickly trying to clean up the growing puddle in the back seat. Every napkin and burp cloth we had available was saturated. In the end, we escaped from the taxi before the driver realized what happened and both Grant and Xan went straight to the shower.

All in all, it was a successful arrival and made for a funny story.

It's been 8 long months since we last hit the road. Our first child, Xan, was born in February and that put on hold any travels we had planned. Xan is now almost 6 months old so we thought he was ready for his inaugural journey. Grant and I choose to start small. Although Xan already has his passport, we thought it was best to begin with a shorter plane ride. So, we are off to Boston and a road trip around New England

This blog, which has up until this time covered our explorations of the world, will now also include the craziness of traveling with a child. I have read everything I could find about how to trek with an infant. Pros and Cons. In the end we elected to just “See how Xan handles it”. I’m anticipating this being more of an adventure than any of our other travels :)

10. Ethel's Chocolate Factory

We took a long taxi ride out to the factory on New Year's Day. They were open but not making chocolate! I did get to purchase chocolate in the gift shop before taking a taxi ride back to the strip. The whole trip took 45 minutes and too much $$. While walking through the Flamingo later in the week I saw an Ethel's chocolate store. I'm glad Grand had a good sense of humor about my mis-adventure

9. New Year's Eve Fireworks

8. Brazilian Restaurant

As if my cholesterol intake wasn't high enough on this trip, we visited a Brazilian style restaurant (all you can eat meat). We tried everything but by the end would only except filet or roast beef.

7. Best Buffet search, winner: Bellagio!

We did serious research, looking for the best buffet. The winner was clearly the Bellagio. I had lots of Kobe top sirloin and 3 creme brulees. Magnific!!

6. Le Reve

A water based Cirque du Soleil show at the new Wynn Hotel and Casino. It was amazing!

5. First Class

Since I was 7 months pregnant on this trip Grant got first class plane tickets so I would be comfortable. It was so much fun!!

4. Hacienda Nicholas Bed and Breakfast

I have already talked about the AWESOME B&B in Santa Fe. I loved it!!!

3. White out at the Grand Canyon

1 mile down, 10 miles across and 1/4 mile visibility. Needless to say we couldn't see a thing but we did enjoy walking along the canyon rim in the snow storm

One mile deep, 10 miles wide and 1/4 mile visibility. The only thing to see was a wall of white. Grant and I did have fun walking the South Rim trails (10 feet from the edge, no rail) in a foot of snow. I guess we will try again tomorrow.

Visiting the Tree Dwellers

Today Grant and I started our road trip from Santa Fe to Las Vegas (Nevada, not New Mexico). We stopped along the way at several interesting sites: the San Ildefonso Pueblo Indian reservation, the Bandelier National Monument and an Outlet Mall. At Bandelier we hiked to the home of the cliff dweller Indians (Grant kept calling them tree dwellers by mistake). These Indians built their homes in the natural caves in the side of the cliff. We were able to climb up to several and go inside.

Not surprisingly, Grant noticed a young deer and spent 10 minutes taking pictures and trying to get as close as possible :)

Hacienda Nicholas

I really enjoyed our time in Santa Fe but by far my favorite part was the Bed and Breakfast, Hacienda Nicholas, were we spent the night. All day there were drinks and miniature German chocolate cakes available for snacks. For breakfast this morning I had an Italian frittata with mushrooms, mozzarella cheese, sundried tomatoes and spinach (Grant had cereal). The room and bed were so comfortable that we slept for 12 hours. Right outside our room was a wood fireplace and comfortable sitting area. The courtyard looked charming but since it was covered in snow we didn’t spend a lot of time there. I can’t wait to go back!

We are on our way to Albuquerque for the first leg of our New Year's trip. Grant (spoiling me as always) thought since I am pregnant, I have to sit in first class.

I'm trying my best to look as if I belong in the first class section with my in-flight wifi and bounty of food. I don't know that they buy it but, it is AWESOME anyway! Thanks Grant!!!

Grant and I have made it one of our family traditions to spend New Year's Eve in a new and unique place every year. This year was more difficult than in the past. I will be almost 8 months pregnant by the time New Year's rolls around, and that seriously limits our options. So for our last hurrah, at least until the baby is old enought to stay with grandparents for an extended period of time, we are going to . . . . . VEGAS!!

Lydia was gracious enough to cart us around the city including the Zoo (a total of 4 times)

An off-shoot of the Zoo, this facility concentrated on breeding programs and animal conservation. We were able to ride a large jeep through the animal habitat area.

An old time candy store in official 'Old Town' San Diego. Lydia, Grant and I had finished off all of the homemade toffee and caramel by the end of the day. We should have gone back for more :)

This zoo reminded me a lot of Disney's Animal Kingdom. The fences blended in with the surroundings and the animals were in a natural looking habitat.

I'm a little behind on my posting and haven't written anything about our awesome trip to San Diego. My sister, Lydia, was there for a 4 month internship and offered (or really we invited ourselves) to put us up for a long weekend. She was a perfect hostess and showed us all around the city. Grant especially loved the zoo, no surprise there. We ended up buying a season pass so he could visit everyday. Xan (our first child, due March 1st) acquired his first toy in the elephant exhibit. It was definitely a trip to remember!! See our pictures below.

The San Miguel hotel was located on a pedestrian street in the old city of Cordoba. Our flowered filled balcony overlooked an old church square and all the rooms surrounded a courtyard. It was a beautiful place.

You know how I LOVE Broadway, so Grant took me to one last play during our overnight layover in NYC. We saw Mary Poppins.

Even in my jet lagged state it kept me entertained. Bert was VERY, VERY good. Honestly, I enjoyed his performace more than anyone else (even Mary). I won't tell you everything he did. It might ruin the surprise.

Our last night in Spain and we had dinner at. . . . a Chinese restaurant. Typical of us. We did order completely in Spanish. Grant was even able to answer all of the waitress’ questions. I was impressed. (He has really been studying the phrase book).

The weather has been beautiful. Today was the only the only day I have even seen clouds and it waited until my siesta to actually rain. I guess it’s true what they say. The rain in Spain does stay mainly in the plain.

Early Morning in Cordoba

Grant woke me up at 9am this morning. What was he thinking? So we got an early start in Cordoba. It did work out for the best. We toured the city in the cool of the day and by the time everything closed for the afternoon siesta we were finished. I was able to have a little siesta of my own!

The cathedral in this city has a very different look than most European churches. It was a Christian church, then a mosque and then a church again. Because the same building has been converted several times the design is very unique.

BTW, I had my birthday dinner last night in a cute little plaza in the old city of Cordoba. Grant ordered fried sardines and liked them! How about that? I was shocked!

Scaling the Walls of Alhambra

One day to see everything in Granada. We were kind of on a schedule, so the timed entry ticket for the Alhambra (palace built by Moorish kings) was not working for us. Grant, ever the problem solver, said, “Let’s sneak in”. After 8 years I should not have doubted his ability to find a way and 5 minutes later we were in. To be clear, we did purchase tickets; we just didn’t have the time to wait for our appointed entry.

If you notice in the pictures I am wearing a dress and my 3” heels. Yes, I scaled the fence in that get-up. After the “break-in” we really enjoyed the palace. It was beautiful in its simplicity. The whole complex is constructed of wood, plaster and stone. What was created out of those common materials was a work of art.

Today is my 30th Birthday! We are in Granada, Spain for the day. It is beautiful here. Lots of small, winding streets and a mix of Spanish and Moorish architecture .

I am now completely addicted to the Spanish way of life!! We wake up around 10 or 11 am and have breakfast, tour around until 2 or 3 pm and then take a break (maybe a nap or lay down in the park to read a book). We are back at it again by 4 pm and don´t have dinner until at least 10pm. The streets are hoppin´ until around 2am. By the time we make it back to the hotel it´s close to 3 am. I LOVE it!!!

Madrid has really been a beautiful city. Grant and I were able to slow down a little here and enjoy the sites at a more relaxing pace.

Don´t get me wrong, I don´t delight in human suffering. But if you choose to go into an enclosed area & torment an animal by stabbing it repeatedly, you deserve what is coming to you. I wonder, does the bull ever win?

I can´t help but think of the gladiator games in ancient Rome. Were they like this multiplied many times over? I really didn´t expect them to kill the bull. Some chasing the red cape and then off they go. Grant and I both thought it was barbaric and cheered for the bull. It´s a good thing no one around us spoke English. I don´t know how popular we would have been.

Typically I would not be on the lookout for the nearest McDonald’s but free Wifi is a priceless commodity in Spain. This is how it goes. . . . . .

Stop into your local McDonald’s, order something off the 1 Euro menu and voila’, you are given 30 minutes internet access. I know that I shouldn’t be eating McDonald’s in a foreign country. I should be sampling the local cuisine. Don’t worry, we are doing that as well but don’t ask me to pass on internet and French fries.

Grant and I took a day trip out of Barcelona to visit the Monastery of Montserrat. This monastery is cut into the side of a mountain in Catalonia. To reach the absolute pinnacle you must hike up a rough trail cut right into the stone. Along the way you can see hermit´s caves and small chapels. Sounds like fun, right? those of you who know me, know that I almost always have on high heels. On this particular occasion I had donned a pair of 3 inch slip-ons. After 20 minutes of steps and rough terrain, I will admit this hike started to be less than fun, but I have never been one to turn down a challenge. More than an hour later we reached the top and saw a most stunning view. It was worth it! We thought there would be a way to ride down the mountain buy not so. We found the only way down we the way we came up. By the time we reached the bottom our feet had been much abused but I was able to brag a little when the people at the trail head asked if we made it all the way to the top!

The Monastery itself was beautiful and still home to Benedictine monks. We were able to listen in to part of Sunday Mass and hear one of the oldest boys´ choirs in Europe.

We arrived by overnight train in Barcelona early this morning (earlier than most Spaniards rise) and started our day. Grant and I covered LOTS of ground. Below are some of our pictures for the day.

What is a Tapa?

I had a couple of questions regarding Tapas so I thought I would address them here. As the story goes. . .

Many years ago, after a hard days work, the Spanish would stop at the local restaurant for a refreshing drink. A piece of bread was placed on top of the bottle to keep out the flies. Wanting to outdo the competing restaurants, one put a piece of cheese on top of the bread. Hearing of this change another restaurant added cheese and tomato and these were the first ‘tapas’. What developed was a meal consisting of many plates of small, appetizer sized portions of food. Today you can get almost any type of food (American, Chinese, etc) at different Tapas restaurants throughout the world but it was originally a Spanish idea.

Journey to the Edge of the World

Today we took a day trip to Gibraltar (thought by the Phoenicians to be the edge of the world). BTW, did you know that Gibraltar is not in Spain but is part of Britain? It was a little cloudy so we couldn’t see all the way to Africa but we did climb (or ride) to the top of the rock and see the Gibraltar monkeys. The legend is, as long as the monkeys remain, so will the British.

Option #1 – Drive to the top of the Rock. We did that first but wanted to experience something a little more distinctive which brings us to. . . .
Option #2 – Take original winding path cut into the side of the Rock to the top. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to go the whole way but we did get a taste of the untamed side of Gibraltar

Tomorrow is our last day in Malaga and I am saddened to leave. I have thoroughly enjoyed the Mediterranean coast. As a special treat, Grant booked an afternoon in a Turkish bath house. I’m so excited!! We will journey through the tepidarium, caldarium and frigidarium until we reach the massage room. It will be just like living in ancient Rome.

The evening will bring the departure of our overnight train to Barcelona. I do love to sleep on trains! I will leave you with a couple more pictures (of the beach and of course, the animals that Grant always finds)

Decisions, Decisions

Lying on the beautiful Mediterranean beach is quite taxing. Do I sit in the wind or behind the wind screen? Do I have a 30 min or 1 hour beach massage? Do I go get my own tapas or have the cabaña boy bring it to me? I hope I can survive tomorrow, as I have to do it all over again!

Yankees vs. Shrek

We had 36 hours in NY before our flight to Malaga. First stop Yankee’s stadium for the 2nd of 3 Yankees vs. Phillies game. After an exciting Yankees’ 9th inning, come from behind, victory we jetted over to Times Square to purchase discounted theater tickets. With 30 minutes until the shows began, we were able to get tickets to Shrek, the Musical. While not the best show I’ve ever seen, the actors were very talented. Donkey and Lord Farquaad where especially funny.

Because it was so close to my birthday, we were upgraded at the Millennium hotel. I could see the Empire State building from our room. We slept late in the big feather bed. Ahhh!

9. Korean War Memorial - My personal favorite war memorial. I had to add it to the list
8. Wailing in line at the National Archives - We had to wait 1.5 hours to get into the National Archives (home of the US Constitution, Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence). To pass the time we played all kinds of games. The people around us were very entertained
7. Air & Space Museum - Off course I had to include this. I stood around the Space Shuttle exhibit in case anyone had questions. No bites
6. Botanical Gardens - Beautiful place to go on a rainy day
5. Union Station food court - Grant's favorite. There were several Asian restaurants that would give out free samples
4. Washington in Bloom - Cherry tree blossoms, tulips and lots of flowers I didn't recognize but it was beautiful
3. Games - We played name that tune, raced up and down the escalators, paper/rock/scissors and cross the street with Grant (Grant is very fast. To follow him you take a chance. You might make it across before hit by a car and you might not)
2. Pentagon - Bobby McCaleb, a Colonel in the US Army, took us on a tour of the Pentagon (Bobby and I are from the same home town). It was AWESOME!! Pentagon tours aren't available to the general public. You can only be taken in by someone who works there. It was by far the coolest thing we did.

Easter in Arlington

Since we were going to be in Washington DC for Easter I thought it would be nice to spend it in Arlington National Cemetery; a very quite and reverent place.

This day we also spent time walking to most of the national monuments. My favorite by far is the Korean War Memorial. It seems so alive.

We ended the day with a tour to the Air & Space Museum. That's my kind of place. It never ceases to amaze me when I see all man has accomplished and how vast and beautiful the universe is. God made such a wonderful place for us to explore. (Unbelievably, I took no pictures of this museum. I must have been too caught up in the exhibits)

Rain or Shine

Since rain was forecasted for today we slept in. We finally got out and headed to the Nature History Museum about 11:30 am. EVERYONE in DC was at that museum. After a hitting the highlights we visited the Botanical Gardens. Finally, the last stop of the afternoon was the US Capitol (inside this time). I am now taking a break back at the hotel. Hopefully I can get everyone up for a night tour of the Monuments.

Without realizing it, I have planned a trip to Washington D.C in the middle of the Cherry Blossom Festival. The city will be in bloom and beautiful, so I hear :) Grant and I leave tomorrow along with two of our friends (Anna and Ryan). Hopefully the weather will be better than forecasted. So, this year I will turn 30. Crazy, right? Grant, spoiling me the way he does, has planned a 'surprise' trip!! By surprise I mean he has planned this trip on his own. Where is he taking me? SPAIN! Not just any where in Spain but to the romantic Mediterranean coast. Hmm, I need a new bathing suit :)

I sleep like a baby on Trains

Grant and I just returned home from our Great Canadian Adventure. It was cold but we had a blast! Below are my top 10 favorite things about Canada and several pictures from our trip.

10. High Tea in Toronto - I tried so hard to be fancy and eat all the food served but I almost lost my cucumber sandwich on the white tablecloth
9. Ice canyon walk - On New Year's Eve we took a hike through a frozen river canyon. It was awesome
8. Underground system in Toronto and Montreal - You could walk around the whole downtown area and never go outside. In the tunnels where mall, food courts, movie theaters, Doctor's offices, grocery stores, etc.
7. Animals - We didn't see as many animals as Grant wished but he did get up close and personal with an Elk.
6. Hockey game - We saw the Montreal Canadians vs the Toronto Maple Leafs play. GO HABS!
5. Canadian Rockies - Half of our pictures are of the mountains
4. Beautiful Banff (and Jasper) - These towns were made to look like postcards
3. Snow :) - everywhere, piles and piles. I have never seen so much.
2. The Canadian people - The people where so incredibly generous. One group helped us scalp tickets to the hockey game
1. TRAIN!! - I loved the train ride. We had our own little (I mean small) cabin and ate all of our meals in the dinning car.

What next? Maybe the Orient Express!!

Grant and I just returned from weekend in New York City, where we saw 5 different plays. In order of favorite we saw Rock of Ages, All My Sons, Wicked, The Little Mermaid and Equus. We had an incredible time!! I can't say enough about this trip. Below are my thoughts on each play

*ROCK OF AGES - Great set list! The whole audience sang along and clapped the whole show. The songs were all from the 80's hair band era. I would love to see this show again!

*ALL MY SONS - Very little set/scenery but who needs it will acting like this. The story was interesting. Dianne Wiest was absolutly incredible. I have always enjoyed Patrick Wilson's work and he didn't disappoint. I'm not sure how much I would have enjoyed the play without these highly talented actors. And yes Katie Holmes, while not the best actor on stage, did a good job

*WICKED - Awesome music. This soundtrack is now on my Ipod. The set and stage were neat to watch. I would definitely see this musical again. BTW, this story is very different than the book.

*THE LITTLE MERMAID - The same great music from the movie with a couple of new songs. Kid friendly show. The alternating underwater and land transitions in the musical were smoothly done. All of the sea creatures wore 'heelys' to simulate the glide of swimming.

*EQUUS - Bizarre story. I did enjoy seeing Daniel Radcliffe. That's the only redeemable part of play.

It was an unusually hot day today in San Francisco - 80+ degrees. We walked around the Fisherman's Wharf area and had lunch in Boudin's (sourdough bread factory and cafe). We also took a city tour and got a great overview of everything that is the city.

After my first old fashioned Trolley car ride, we spent the afternoon in Chinatown, exploring the shops and markets. We even found the 'Fortune Cookie Lady' down an alleyway.

Unfortunally, my camera and computer are not presently speaking so I can't post any pictures. I will undate as soon as I can.

Tomorrow we head to Napa and the JELLY BELLY FACTORY!!

Grant and I are in the airport waiting for our plane to San Francisco, the first of 3 trips we are taking in the last half of 2008.

I will post pictures of our time in California. As well as San Francisco, we are planning to tour Napa Valley and Yosemite National Park.

What to say about Petra?

What to say about Petra? First of all it was HOT but definitely worth the walk. It was about a 2.5 mile walk to the end of the city, passing building after building carved into the sandstone rock face of the cliffs (most were tombs). Grant and I climbed all around and up the rocky cliffs exploring. The view of the surrounding mountains was incredible.

The last site visited on our tour was Mount Nebo. This is the mountain that Moses climbed to view the promise land. At the top we (like Moses) were able to see the entire Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and all the way to Jerusalem. The perfect ending to our trip.

Jerusalem and Jerash

Yesterday, our last day in Jerusalem we again visited the Wailing Wall and the possible sites of Calvary and the Garden Tomb. We had the Lord’s Supper in the garden.

Today in the Jordanian city of Jerash we saw the most fabulous Roman and Greek ruins. We explored them for several hours. Grant, ever the climber, can you find him in these pictures?

Tomorrow we will visit Petra! I can’t wait!!!!

Jerusalem

Today we spent time in the Old City of Jerusalem. The Temple Mount area contains the most religious site for both Islam and Judaism. Our guide got us entrance onto the actual Temple Mount to the area around the Dome of the Rock. Only Muslims can actually enter the site. We also visited the Wailing Wall (western wall), the closest modern day Jews can get to the site of the Holy of Holies. It was a lot of history to take in.

The southern wall of the Temple Mount has been excavated to uncover the original steps that led into the Jewish Temple. These are the steps Jesus took into the Temple when He broke up the money changers in the Temple Court

We also visited the Mount of Olives and the area identified as the Garden of Gethsemane. The trees there were ancient but not quite to the time of Jesus.

Floating in the Dead Sea

WOW. We sure have seen a lot.

Swimming in the Dead Sea was nothing like I expected. The guide said we would be able to float easily. It was more that we were unable to do anything else. You are forced to the surface like a fishing cork.

Masada was the last stronghold of Jews during the Roman campaign. 1000 people (including women and children) held off a legion of Roman Soliders for 2 years. There were incredible views of the Dead Sea from the height of the plateau. There was an hour long hike (up steep terrian) to the top but we took the cable car. If my Dad were here, we would have hiked up the path (the same one used thousands of years ago).

We stopped at the site recognized as the location of Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist. Several in our group chose to be baptized here. Grant and I were able to stick our feet in the water.

At a small oasis in the desert, the throne of Israel was passed from King Saul to David. We visited that very spot. It's hard to take in the history we are experiencing.

Today we arrived in Jerusalem. We participated in a welcome ceremony overlooking the Old City. Dinner tonight was in Abraham’s Tent. He graciously invited us into his house and served quite a feast. We sat on pillows on the floor around low tables. The view from the tent was unbelievable!! I could almost believe I had traveled back thousands of years.

Talkeetna

We are off on our next adventure into Alaska. Today we drove from Anchorage to the interesting town of Talkeetna. It is known for it's colorful characters. The picture is of Grant and Xan in the middle of the street at rush hour. Tomorrow we are headed on a flight seeing trip into Denali National Park.
